Religious Education in 5G...

Building communities centred on prayer, stillness and reflection

Prayer in 5G

Every classroom in a Catholic school has a prayer table or focus. These are just some of the ways which I have dressed mine in various liturgical seasons.

Every week a student in 5G is responsible for decorating our small classroom prayer table using a box full of items I have collected over my time as a R.E. teacher.

Creation

While learning about the gifts of God's wonderful creation, the students were asked to collect items that represented different parts of His world.

Every student was able to display these items on their desks and we said a progressive prayer while walking from desk to desk, contemplating the items from each student.

The Stations of the Cross

My students were asked to creatively represent the 14 Stations of the Cross using shoe boxes, craft materials and plasticene. They used these dioramas as the basis for their reflective prayers during Holy Week and we kept them on display in the Library throughout the season of Easter. We filmed and narrated each Station using Garageband and iMovie and shared the brilliant result on YouTube. To take a look, click the blue button above.

Responding to Scripture Part A

In Term 3, 2013, the students used their sculptural skills to create something out of plasticine in response to four Gospel stories we examined in class.

Here's some of their interpretations; washing the disciples feet, soldier's helmets, prayer hands and bowls. I was very proud of their efforts!

Responding to Scripture Part B

Some of the scripture stories we have explored included:

  • Jesus washing the discples feet

  • Jesus loving everyone

  • Jesus curing people who are sick

  • Jesus caring for children

We also were lucky to have Father Vincent come and speak to us on the Yr 5 Faith Day and you can see that in the last image. Thank you Fr Vincent!

Saint Patrick

This year as we have our 1:1 iPad scheme in 5G, we decided to learn about the feast of St Patrick and then practice our photo ediing skills. The students donned some Irish items and photographed each other.

They then used an app called Aviary and Pic Collage to edit and collage their images. We used the images to illustrate our research in R.E.The results were fantastic!
