Science in 5G...

Scitech Excursion

Before Scitech came to OLA, the Yr 5 classes went to Scitech! We had an absolute ball.

One of the shows we saw was called 'Slime and You' full of interesting things to do with slime which isn't really a liquid and isn't really a solid.

We also explored the 'Top Secret: Licence to Spy' exhibit and were given access to lots of clues to the espionage and kidnapping of the famous scientist, Professor Iwanda Wye.

Light

5G explored the use of light in and out of the home as well as conducted experiments using different materials to see if light from a torch would shine through.

We tried baking paper, aluminum foil, glad wrap, bubble wrap and regular paper.

We also explored how light is reflected and refracted in various directions.

We are such bright sparks!

Scitech Incursion

When the lovely people from Scitech came to visit OLA, 5G were in for a treat. Five groups each had a big plastic container full of miscellaneous items that they had to sort into separate categories.

The students had to work together in teams to sort their material into logical categories. Some of it was harder than they initially anticipated and they had to think carefully about what to use and how to use it.

Take a look at how we went...

Planting for Life

Understanding the journey of a seed through it's life cycle to a fruiting plant was the focus of 5G's plants work.

We grew broad bean seeds from germination, to seedlings and eventually they were big enough to take home and plant in the ground.

Broad bean stew anyone?

Energy & Force

Being able to predict, measure and evaluate the outcome of experiments are vital scientific skills for upper primary students.

In this example, 5G used the materials you can see in the first image to propel a weighted box carrying 20 paperclips  a certain distance depending on how far back the box was drawn using  rubber band.

We recorded our results in our books and made a small graph showing these results on Excel.

Being Waterwise

Particularly in our Australian climate, conserving water is especially important. The students in 5G explore the uses and misuses of water continually.

As a Waterwise school, OLA is committed to promote and model great water saving tips and encourage our students to do the same.

Here you can see some of our great work in this regard.

States of Matter

During our unit of work on the three states of matter (solids, liquids and gases), 5G were instructed to create a matching game that asked students to create many images and words onto coloured cards that would be playable by other students in the class.

We had to know a lot about what features solids, liquids and gases have so that we were ready to successfully make matches to play. Once we were ready, we played and evaluated the games according to this rubric that the ckass came up with. We photographed the board and edited our selections using the DoodleBuddy app by using the drawing tool and typing a constructive comment.
